China is becoming the center of attention for the world, prominently positioned with a CSI 300 Index launch by ChinaAMC gathering $3.6 billion in just three days in July, and China Universal capturing $1.3 billion into a Shanghai Composite Index Fund.

  • this week moved its CEO to Hong Kong from London, acknowledging, “Asia and China are the centre of gravity of the world and our business”.
  • The G20 officially replaced the G7, mostly to make room for the growing role of China (and Brazil).
  • Robert Zoellick, current president of the World Bank, in a Johns Hopkins University lecture pointed toward the Chinese Renminbi and the Euro as alternatives to the US dollar (the World Bank forecasts 7.2% GDP growth for China this year).

Asset Allocation, Bismarck, China and the US Dollar — Emerging Market Fund Opportunities

After BRIC, BRICK and Chindonesia, industry observers are now suggesting Otto von Bismarck as the new EM godfather: Brazil, India, South Africa, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, Russia, China and Korea.  

A few of the meaningful trends include: a) a broader set of emerging markets are likely to lead the industry in terms of growth in the years ahead;  b) emerging markets are distancing themselves from “developed” markets, especially the US; c) there are growing concerns about the US dollar, and the Bismarck economies are proposing a more diversified global currency system...
